Wally: The Light We Didn’t Know We Needed
The Alvi family has always had a deep love for animals. Our home was never just a home, it was always a space shared with the ones who needed care, whether that meant adopting a cat or fostering pets.

Wally came into our lives when he was just six months old. My dad’s colleague was moving away and was planning to give him up to a shelter. The idea of such a small, gentle cat losing his home didn’t feel right to us. So we stepped in and took him in, not fully realizing how much he would end up changing our lives. It was one of the best decisions we ever made.
Not long after, the world shifted. COVID began, and suddenly everything felt uncertain and heavy. Days blurred together, and like many families, we faced moments of anxiety and emotional strain. But in the middle of all of that, there was Wally.

He became something to look forward to. A quiet comfort in a loud and overwhelming time. There is something incredibly grounding about having a pet, especially in a family where depression and anxiety are realities we’ve experienced. Wally brought a sense of calm into our home. He didn’t need to say anything just his presence was enough. The mental health benefits of pets were clear every day.
Then came another big transition. My brother and I moved to Canada, leaving behind our home, our routines, and most of our family. It was one of the hardest periods of our lives. Adjusting felt overwhelming, and there were moments where the loneliness felt heavier than we expected. And that’s when we knew we needed Wally with us.
Bringing pets to Canada wasn’t just about moving a pet. It was about bringing a piece of comfort, familiarity, and emotional support with us. When he arrived, everything felt different. The space felt warmer. Coming home felt easier. There was something waiting for us again. Wally didn’t just grow up with us. He carried us through some of our hardest moments.

Baby: The Cat Who Found Us
The Alvi family has always believed that some animals come into your life exactly when they’re meant to. Baby is one of those stories a true rescue cat story.
One day, my parents were simply out for a walk when they saw him, a small Persian cat alone on the street. Something about the situation didn’t feel right. He wasn’t meant to be there. They brought him home, thinking it would just be temporary.
They put up posters, asked around, and tried everything to find his owner. But no one came forward. And slowly, without even realizing it, he became part of the family. They named him Baby. It wasn’t a planned decision it was one made from care, instinct, and a feeling that he was meant to stay. This was a moment of truly adopting a rescue cat.

At the same time, like many families, we were navigating emotional ups and downs. Depression and anxiety are things we’ve experienced, and in those moments, the smallest sources of comfort can mean everything. Baby became one of those sources. There’s something about the way animals show up for you quietly, consistently, without expectations. Baby brought warmth, calm, and a sense of pet companionship that filled spaces we didn’t always know how to fill ourselves.
Soon after, my parents also moved to Canada, and this time, Baby came with them. He wasn’t just a cat rescue anymore he was family. He brought familiarity into a new place, softened the transition, and reminded us again that sometimes the most meaningful connections happen unexpectedly. Baby didn’t just get rescued he gave something back to us, too.
Together
Wally and Baby came into our lives in completely different ways, one we chose to protect, and one who found his way to us. But both became something so much more.
